So, I got it into my head that I wanted to try my hand at remaking this fancy Yves Saint Laurent YSL JUNE BOX BAG. Yeah, that’s the one, everyone’s talking about it. Sounds fancy, right? I thought, “Why not?” I’ve seen a lot of bags in my time, and I figured I could give this a go. This YSL, they have all sorts of bags, but this one is the JUNE BOX, and it’s, well, like a little box.
First thing I did was look up everything I could find about this YSL. Turns out, this Yves Saint Laurent guy, he was a big deal back in the day. Started this whole thing in 1961 with his partner, Pierre Bergé. They say this JUNE BOX BAG is a classic style, never goes out of style. Made clothes, shoes, you name it. I even read that their stuff holds its value, like a good investment. Fancy that!
Then, I went on a hunt for materials. Now, this bag, it’s made with the good stuff, genuine leather, silk, and all that. They say that’s why it’s so expensive, that and the craftsmanship. All those little details, you know? I managed to find some pretty decent leather, not the cheapest, but good quality. I wanted to do this right, you see.
- Sourcing the leather: I spent a whole afternoon just feeling different leathers. Ended up choosing a nice, thick piece that felt just right.
- Finding the right hardware: This was a bit tricky. That YSL logo, it’s on all their bags. I found some similar-looking clasps and buckles online after days of searching. It wasn’t exactly the same, but close enough.
- The lining: Now, I couldn’t find silk that wouldn’t break the bank, so I went with a sturdy, good-looking fabric that I think will hold up well.
Next, I started cutting. I made a pattern based on pictures I found and some similar bags I had lying around. Let me tell you, cutting leather is not as easy as it looks! It takes a steady hand and a really sharp knife. I messed up a couple of times, had to recut some pieces, but that’s part of the process, I guess.
After cutting, came the sewing. Now, I’m no expert with a sewing machine, but I know my way around one. Sewing leather is tough, you need a special needle and thread. And you have to go slow, make sure everything lines up just right. There were a few times I had to rip out seams and start over, but I was determined to get it right.
The hardest part was probably putting the whole thing together. Getting the sides to match up with the top and bottom, making sure the lining fit snugly inside, attaching the hardware. It was like a puzzle, a really complicated, frustrating puzzle. But piece by piece, it started to look like a bag.
Finally, after many hours, and let’s be honest, a few choice words, it was done. My very own, handmade, not-quite-perfect, but pretty darn good, Remake of the Yves Saint Laurent YSL JUNE BOX BAG. It’s got that classic look, that sturdy feel. It even has a little tab inside with a serial number, just like the real ones! They are often located near the stitch line, I put mine there too. I’m pretty proud of it, I have to say. It’s not exactly the same as the original, but it’s got that same spirit, you know? And who knows, maybe these young folks with their fancy bags will think it’s pretty cool too.
My Realization
It was a lot of work, but I learned a lot. And I think I’ve got a new appreciation for those folks who make these high-end bags. It’s not as easy as it looks! But it was fun, a good challenge. And now I have a new bag, one that I made with my own two hands. That’s something special, right? Maybe I’ll try making another one sometime, maybe not a YSL, maybe something else. We’ll see. But for now, I’m going to enjoy my new bag, and maybe show it off a little. After all, who wouldn’t want to show off a bag that they made themselves?
