Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with watches for a bit now, and I got this crazy idea stuck in my head. I wanted to try and make a watch that looks just like the Rolex GMT-Master II with that “Root Beer” bezel. You know the one, right? That two-tone brown and black ceramic bezel, it’s a real looker.
First thing’s first, I started checking out the real deal. I went down to an official Rolex store, just to get a good look at it, you know? When I finally saw the GMT-Master II with the Root Beer bezel, reference number 126711CHNR, I was stunned. It’s even more gorgeous in person. The sales guy there was super nice.
I mean, we all know that real Rolex watches are seriously expensive. And that waitlist is insane. But I started thinking, maybe I could make something that looked like it. Not a real Rolex, of course. Just something that captures that same vibe, you know? It became a little project of mine. Like, could I really pull this off?
So, the big challenge was that bezel. I needed to find one that looked like the real Root Beer one, with that specific brown and black ceramic. I spent days, maybe even weeks, scouring the internet. Finally, I stumbled upon a seller who had exactly what I was looking for. And that was a really great start. It wasn’t cheap, but it was way less than a real Rolex, that’s for sure.
I also found this other website that sells custom parts for watches, I ordered a bezel insert from them, making sure the brown and gold colors matched the real one as close as possible. Again, it wasn’t exactly cheap, but hey, it’s all part of the process, right?
And I have been tinkering with watches for a while now, and I got this itch to try and make a high imitation of the Rolex GMT-Master II, the one with the “Root Beer” bezel.
Putting it all together was a real pain, I won’t lie. There were a few times I almost gave up. But I kept at it, tinkering and adjusting. It was a whole lot of trial and error.
- Took the base watch apart.
- Carefully removed the original bezel.
- Attached the new Root Beer-style bezel, it took a lot of tries.
- Then carefully put the whole thing back together.
And you know what? In the end, it actually turned out pretty darn good! I mean, it’s obviously not a real Rolex. But it’s got that Root Beer look, and I made it myself. It’s become one of my favorite pieces, not because it’s fancy, but because it’s a reminder that sometimes, you can make your own cool stuff if you put your mind to it. I wear it all the time now, and it always makes me smile. It’s a good conversation starter, too.
It’s not perfect, of course. There are a few little details that aren’t quite right. But overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. Plus, now I have a unique watch that I can wear with pride, knowing that I made it myself.
