Okay, so let me tell you about the time I tried to remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001. It’s a real fancy watch, you know? I’ve always been into watches, and this one, man, it’s a beauty.
Get Started
First, I spent hours just staring at pictures of the real deal. I needed to figure out the details, like the size and everything. I found out it’s 39mm wide and 8.08mm thick. Pretty standard, but it’s the little things that count. They say it’s water-resistant to 30 meters, but I wasn’t planning on swimming with mine, obviously.
Then, I started gathering the parts. I found a case that was pretty close to the original, it’s round and polished, just like the Patek. Finding the right crystal was a bit of a pain. You want that sapphire crystal, that’s the good stuff.
The Process
- Finding the Movement: This was the hardest part. The movement is like the engine of the watch. I couldn’t find the exact one Patek uses, but I got a decent one that does the job. It’s not the same, but hey, it ticks!
- Dial and Hands: I messed up a few dials before I got one I was happy with. It’s all about getting the right color and those little markers just right. The hands were tricky too. I wanted them to look elegant, like the original.
- Putting it Together: Okay, this was nerve-wracking. I’m not a watchmaker, but I watched a ton of videos and took it slow. I used some basic tools, nothing too fancy. Getting the movement in the case was the most stressful part.
Facing Problems
I scratched the case a couple of times, had to polish it out. Then there was the time I dropped a tiny screw and spent an hour crawling around on the floor looking for it. It wasn’t easy, let me tell you.
Almost Done
But after a lot of trial and error, I finally got it all together. It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot. But it looked pretty good! I mean, you wouldn’t mistake it for a real Patek Philippe, but it was my Patek Philippe, you know? I even got a nice leather strap for it. Felt pretty proud of myself, not gonna lie.
The Result
It took me a few weeks, working on it here and there. And yeah, I probably spent more than I should have on parts. I saw some listings for the real Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001, some were going for around $28,000, others were even over $30,000! Crazy, right? Mine definitely didn’t cost that much, but it wasn’t cheap either. But it was worth it, just for the experience of making it myself. At least, I successfully completed this project.
So, that’s my story of remaking a Patek Philippe. It was a fun project, even with all the headaches. Learned a lot, and now I have a unique watch that I can say I built myself. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine.
