Okay, so, I’ve been eyeing the Patek Philippe Gondolo 7041R-001 for a while now. It’s a real beauty, but the price tag? Ouch. So, I thought, why not try to remake it myself? Sounds crazy, I know, but hear me out.
The Beginning
First things first, I spent hours just staring at pictures of the watch online. The official Patek Philippe website has some good ones, you know, where you can really see the details. I needed to understand what I was dealing with. This Gondolo model, it’s got this elegant, rectangular case and those fancy hands. I started sketching, trying to get the proportions right. Not going to lie, it was tough. I mean, this is a high-end watch, and they don’t cut corners.
Then, I had to think about materials. The original is rose gold, which is way out of my budget. I opted for a decent stainless steel instead. Cheaper, but still looks pretty good. I found a local shop that could sell me a block of stainless steel, and that was the base material sorted.
The Real Work
- Shaping the case: This was a nightmare. I don’t have those fancy machines they use at Patek Philippe. So, I had to get creative. I got myself a small metal file, and a hammer, and just went at it. Slowly, very slowly, I started shaping the steel block into that Gondolo case. My hands were sore for days, and there were times when I wanted to throw in the towel.
- The dial: I had the idea to use some materials from my old watches, so the dial of my new watch is made from that. I carefully removed it from an old watch, and trimmed it down to fit the new case. Not perfect, but it had this vintage vibe that I liked.
- Hands and markers: For the hands, I ended up using some thin metal wires that I found at a hobby store. I bent and shaped them to mimic the Gondolo’s hands. It was fiddly work, but I managed. For the markers, I used tiny pieces of polished metal, sticking them on the dial.
- Movement: Obviously, I couldn’t make a mechanical movement from scratch. I found an old quartz movement from another watch that was roughly the right size. I just had to adjust it a bit to fit into the case. I don’t have the experience of Patek Philippe 150th anniversary chiming watch, but that’s okay.
Putting It All Together
After weeks of work, it was time to assemble everything. I carefully placed the dial into the case, followed by the movement. Then, I attached the hands, which was super tricky. One wrong move, and they’d be bent out of shape. Finally, I added a simple leather strap that I bought online. It was nothing special, but it did the job.
The Result
And there it was, my homemade Patek Philippe Gondolo 7041R-001. It’s not perfect, not by a long shot. There are rough edges, the dial isn’t exactly centered, and the hands are a bit wonky. But you know what? I made it. With my own two hands. And that’s something, right? It’s not about having a perfect replica; it’s about the journey, the effort, and the satisfaction of creating something from scratch. Plus, I saved a ton of money!
